Controlling Mosquitoes In Your Garden

Controlling Mosquitoes In Your Garden

March 18, 2015 By Woodsman Staff Leave a Comment

There’s nothing worse than being constantly bombarded with mosquitoes while you are attempting to work in your garden. This otherwise fun and relaxing outdoor activity can easily become a nightmare when mosquitoes are out in full force.

In fact, the problem can be so bad that it forces some individuals to put up their tools and go inside. Not only are mosquito bites a nuisance, but they can also lead to serious bacterial infections like the West Nile virus.

Instead of calling it quits, though, you should take the necessary action to regain control of your garden by removing these pesky little insects. With a little bit of work and some dedication, you can keep your garden mosquito free.

Remove Their Breeding Grounds

As you may already know, mosquitoes breed in pools and puddles of free-standing water. If you have a problem with these insects in your garden, chances are there are pools of free-standing water somewhere nearby.

Take a few minutes to go around and closely inspect the area for any water that could potentially offer mosquitoes a suitable area to breed and lay their eggs. Things like empty buckets left standing upright, cups, plant pots and even gardening tools can all harbor water. If you come across any of these items filled with water, simply flip them upside down and keep looking for more.

You might be surprised to learn that a typical one-gallon bucket filled with water can harbor tens of thousands of mosquito eggs. When these eggs hatch, your garden will instantly become infested with these blood-sucking insects, feasting on you, your family and any pets that walk around the property.

The bottom line is that you need to pay close attention to any containers that could potentially fill up with water. The couple of minutes it takes to flip them upside down could save you and your family from future heartache.

Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs

So, just how in the world are you supposed to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in your swimming pool or hot tub without draining them on a daily basis? Thankfully, chlorine does a good job at keeping mosquitoes and other pesky insects at bay.

Make sure your pool and/or hot tub are maintained with proper chlorine levels to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Allowing the chlorine to dissipate from it could result in disastrous consequences with hundreds of thousands of new mosquitoes spawning and being released into your garden.

Bug Zappers

Some people invest in those bright bug zapper lanterns in hopes that it will reduce the amount of mosquitoes in their yard. Upon using one, you’ll likely hear it zapping bugs every couple seconds.

Unfortunately, it very rarely zaps mosquitoes since it doesn’t attract them. In fact, some people will argue that bug zappers do more harm than good by zapping the “good” bugs.

For this reason, we recommend avoiding the use of bug zappers in your garden. Instead, look for the mosquitoes’ breeding grounds and work on removing them.

The Woodsman Company offers tree planting, tree pruning and shrub trimming, tree removal and stump grinding as well as a tree wellness program.
