How to Keep Tree Stumps from Sprouting Back Up

How to Keep Tree Stumps from Sprouting Back Up

October 4, 2016 By Woodsman Staff 1 Comment

So, you’ve cut down that burdensome tree in your yard, only to discover it has sprouted back up just a few months later. This is a problem faced by many homeowners and property managers.

Depending on the species, most trees will continue to grow even after they’ve been chopped down. As long as the root system remains intact, the stump will continue to grow.

While you can always chop it back down, there are other ways to deal with a pesky tree stump that keeps sprouting back up.

Destroy the Stump

Cutting down a tree at the base is like putting a band-aid over a wound. It masks the problem temporarily, but it’s not a viable long-term solution.

In most cases, the tree will continue to grow at the stump – unless, of course, you destroy the stump.

Grind it Out

There are a few different ways to destroy a tree stump, one of which is to grind it. There are special machines designed specifically for grinding stumps. They aren’t exactly cheap, however, nor are they are easy to use.

If you aren’t familiar with stump grinders, it’s probably best to choose a different solution to your pesky tree stumps. But if you are familiar with them, you can either buy or rent a stump grinder, the latter of which is more cost-effective for one-time uses.

Use Chemicals

An alternative to using a stump grinder is a chemical application. This doesn’t work as fast as a stump grinder, but most people will agree that it’s easier.

Basically, this method involves drilling several deep holes into the stump, and then filling those holes with a stump-killing chemical (available at most home improvement stores).

As with any chemical product, though, be sure to read the instructions on how to properly, and safely, use it.

Hire a Professional

But there’s a third option, as well: hire a professional tree removal company. They have the tools, manpower and experience necessary to deal with tree stumps, taking this burden off your shoulders.

These are just a few of the most common ways to deal with a tree stump.

Tree stumps can be a nuisance to say the least. They’ll take up valuable yard space, force you to mow around them, and they can harbor insects and disease.

Thankfully, there are ways to eliminate them once and for all: you can either grind up the stump using a special machine, apply a special stump-killing chemical, or hire a professional tree removal specialist.

The Woodsman Company offers tree planting, tree pruning and shrub trimming, tree removal and stump grinding as well as a tree wellness program.

I was looking to know more about the tree removal process. I did not know that using chemicals was a way of preventing stump regrowth. It is good to know that this is an easy method. Something to consider would be to hire a professional service to remove unwanted trees to ensure quality work.
