How to Prevent Weeds from Growing in Your Flowerbed

How to Prevent Weeds from Growing in Your Flowerbed

May 9, 2017 By Woodsman Staff 1 Comment

Flowerbeds are an important part of a home’s curb appeal. They define the space around your home while adding natural sources of vibrant color in the process.

But regardless of where you live, you’ll probably encounter rogue weeds in your flower bed at some point. It may begin with just a single weed, but the problem can quickly spiral out of control.

So, how do you prevent grass and weeds from growing in your flower bed?

Kill Weeds Early

As the saying goes “the early bird gets the worm” holds true when working in your flowerbed. The sooner you remove a weed, the better.

If you remove it early, it won’t have time to develop large roots that burrow deep in the soil.

So, try to get into the habit of inspecting your flowerbed for weeds on a regular basis, removing them as soon as possible.

Remove Weeds at the Roots

Don’t make the mistake of simply chopping or cutting weeds at the base.

If a weed has emerged from the surface, it already has roots in the soil – and you’ll need to remove these roots to prevent it from growing back.

Simply cutting a weed at the base isn’t a long-term solution. Using a hand spade or weed removal tool, dig down around the weed to remove it and its root structure.

Mulch

The most effective solution to prevent weeds from growing in a flowerbed is mulch.

By placing mulch around your flowers, you’ll prevent weeds, grass and other unwanted plant life from growing. Mulch essentially blocks out the sun, restricting plant life from growing.

Popular types of mulch for the flowerbed include the following:

  • Bark
  • Cocoa julls
  • Compost
  • Hay
  • Landscape fabric
  • Leaves
  • Pine Straw

Choose Products Carefully

If you decide to use an herbicide or weed-killing spray, you should choose a product that’s safe for your flowers. Most weed-killing sprays kill more than just weeds; they kill all plant life.

So, using them in your flowerbed could backfire by harming or killing your flowers.

There are some products, however, that are safe for the flowers, although their effectiveness at killing weeds may vary.

Rather than using a weed-killing spray, consider natural solutions like mulch and the manual removal of weeds to keep your flowerbed clean.

The Woodsman Company offers tree planting, tree pruning and shrub trimming, tree removal and stump grinding as well as a tree wellness program.
