Rain is essential for all living organisms, and garden plants are no exception. While requirements vary depending on the particular species, the fact remains that all plants, flowers and trees need H2O survive.
Too much rain, however, can saturate them to the point where mold and mildew begins to grow, killing otherwise healthy plants.
So, how can you protect your garden from excessive and heavy rain?
Runoff
One of the first steps towards protecting your garden from heavy rain is to make sure it has proper runoff. In other words, rainwater should flow away from your garden instead of pooling up around the middle.
If water accumulates around the base of your garden, it will soak down into the soil, drowning your plants. You can prevent this from happening, by creating a sloped runoff, guiding the rainwater away from your garden.
Stake Supports
When heavy rain is accompanied with strong winds, the effects can be even more damaging to garden plants. The combination of strong winds and rain may literally bend plants so much that they snap in half.
You can protect most common species of garden plants from this phenomenon, with stake supports. Place a wooden stake next to your plant and tie it off. The stake will keep the plant upright during harsh weather, protecting it from physical damage.
Give Plants Cover
Choosing the right location for your garden plants will go a long ways toward protecting them from heavy rain. If severe weather is a problem in your area, try temporarily covering your plants with a large tarp. As long as you remove it after the rain has passed, it should prove beneficial in keeping your plants safe.
Remove Damaged Shoots and Limbs
If you notice damage to your garden plants – whether it was caused by heavy rain or not – you should remove the damaged shoots or limbs to prevent further problems.
Allowing damaged shoots or limbs to remain on your plants will only increase the risk of more severe problems, such as disease or even death. Using a clean pair of gardening shears, trim away dead, dying or damaged tissue.
These are just a few simple things that homeowners can do to protect their garden from heavy rain. Above all else, though, keep a close eye on your plants, inspecting them for signs of disease and damage.
Identifying problems such as these early will give you a better chance of fixing them before they snowball into bigger problems.
