Natural Ways to Prevent Weeds from Growing Between Brick Pavers

Natural Ways to Prevent Weeds from Growing Between Brick Pavers

December 6, 2016 By Woodsman Staff Leave a Comment

Brick pavers are frequently used in the construction of residential sidewalks. They offer a simple yet effective solution for this purpose.

Brick pavers are inexpensive, easy to install, and able to withstand the constant battering of Mother Nature. However, it’s not uncommon for weeds to sprout up between them, creating a serious eyesore for homeowners.

So, what steps can you take to prevent weeds from growing between brick pavers?

Pull ‘Em

Of course, one solution is to pull the weeds as they sprout. As long you pull the entire weed, including its root structure, it shouldn’t grow back – not quickly, at least.

You can pull weeds between brick pavers either by hand, or you can use a special weed-removal tool. These tools feature a hooked end, allowing for the complete removal of the weed.

Vinegar

Vinegar is great for a wide variety of applications. You can use it to clean tile grout, deodorize carpet, improve skin and hair, and even prevent weeds from growing.

If you have trouble keeping weeds at bay, try spraying vinegar between the brick pavers. It works by making the soil more acidic, much more acidic, which in turn discourages weeds and other plant life.

And for the price, vinegar is arguably the cheapest weed-killing/prevention product on the market. Just remember to keep it away from the plants you want to keep.

Boiling Water

A second DIY treatment for weeds is boiling water.

With a temperature of 212 degrees Fahrenheit, boiling water will makes quick work of even the toughest weeds, killing them in their tracks. The only problem with this method, however, is that you’ll have to continue doing it.

Pouring boiling water between your brick pavers will kill the weeds, but it’s not going to prevent future weeds from popping back up.

Cover it

Another option to prevent weeds from growing between brick pavers is to cover it with pebbles or rocks.

As long as you apply a thick layer that blankets the entire ground, it should discourage weeds from growing. This isn’t a fool-proof solution, however, as some weed species are invasive and able to grow in just about any type of environment.

Seeing weeds pop up between your brick pavers can be frustrating. And if left unchecked, they can even grow into the brick pavers, causing them to crack open. By following the tips above, however, you should be able to control them.
